Renal physicians, also known as kidney specialists or nephrologists, diagnose and treat conditions affecting the kidneys.
Our renal physician manages acute and chronic kidney disease, cares for patients on dialysis and provides assessment and advice for patients preparing for a kidney transplant. Care also covers conditions linked to kidney function, including high blood pressure, diabetes-related kidney disease, glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidney’s filtering units) and inherited kidney conditions. Assessment and care are also available for patients with kidney disease who are having surgery.
Your GP may refer you to a renal physician if blood tests show reduced kidney function, if there is protein or blood in your urine, if your blood pressure is difficult to control or if you have a family history of kidney disease. A referral from your GP is needed to claim a Medicare rebate for your appointment.
